The Santa Sé Cathedral The Presidential Palace Água Grande The Waterfront Meeting the fishermen Download map The Courthouse Bom Jesus Bom Despacho São Sebastião The discoverers

You can start your itinerary with the Santa Sé cathedral(the See church), which began construction in 1576... and was not completed until 1958. It sits opposite the Presidential Palace (Palácio Presidencial) colored pastel pink. Across the thoroughfare you will find the Água Grande river, and bridges over it at several locations in the city. From there, you can access the waterfront to your left, and the main road that skirts the shoreline. You can meet the fishermen at the Ana Chaves bay. Their fish-laden canoes put to late in the morning, where they are awaited by the 'palaiês' (fishmongers, usually women). Further inland you will find the Feira do Ponto market, where you can purchase fish, a bit of meat, clothing, utensils, and more. Facing the market is a small church, N.S. da Conceição, beside the Baía hotel, not far from a taxi stop (you can recognize taxi cabs by their yellow coloring). Around the market there are houses and shops (boutiques) that cater to various preferences/needs, among themthe Casa da Cultura (House of Culture). Further on, the 'Mercado Municipal' (Municipal Market), where you can find vegetables, fruits, eggs, and more. Another taxi stop serves this market. It is hard to drive around in it. After the market, you can resume the waterfront towards the presidential palace. To your right, facing the sea, is the Palácio de Justiça (Palace of Justice), a beautiful building, renovated in 1999. At the moment it houses the civil registrar. Further away to the right, you will find the Tourist Bureau of São Tomé, where you will find handcrafted goods and artwork for sale. Right beside that building, you will find the postal services, where you can acquire beautiful stamps and dispatch your mail. A bit inland, to your right, will be the theatre, recently renovated, overlooking the 3 de Fevereiro square. Across the street is the Parque Popular where you will find bars and restaurants, a few shops, and the salvaged wrecks of a plane. Go back to the waterfront, and to your right there will be the small Bom Jesus chapel. To your right, down a small wooded walkway, the Bom Despacho chapel. Then, to your left, the São Tomé harbor (where you can board ships to Princípe). Here you will find several ministries (Defense, Justice, Economy, etc.) and Customs. Just before the waterfront's sharp turn, the PM beach and the São Sebastião fortress, placed as if to protect the national museum. Opposite the museum, white statues pay tribute to the discoverers of the country: João de Santarém, Pêro Escobar. Follow the waterfront, and you will find a pleasant residential area where the houses are painted yellow, blue and white. Then you'll reach the Liceu Nacional (National Lyceum) which is but a small distance from the premises of the National Radio. Beside the Lyceum is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then the Portuguese Embassy and the Miramar hotel, the pleasant esplanade of the Passante bar nearby. Finally, about 200 meters ahead of you, the Palácio dos Congressos (Palace of Congress), a modern building constructed after the country became independent.
