The Auto of Floripes is the 'Tchiloli' of Príncipe. It is staged but once a year, on August 10, day of Saint Lourenço. The party lasts all day long. The play is by an anonymous author and nobody knows how the text was brought to the island. Here's how it goes: at dawn on August 10 the christian and moorish ambassadors issue a clarion call on the streets of Santo António. They gather the actors to the sound of drum and horn. The christian ambassador stands in front of the church and the moorish is across the street, on the other bank of the river. The plot is built around the war that Charlemagne and his twelve peers waged on Admiral Balão and his moorish kings. The war can be avoided if one of the groups accepts to convert to the other's religion. Each group then sends an ambassador to the opposite field, proposing the conversion. Three hours of combat oppose Olivério to Fierabras, the latter being son to Balão. The love of Floripes, daughter of Balão, accepts the christian faith and so saves Guy de Bourgogne, Olivério and the others.
The play unfolds in several places throughout the city. Floripes is played by a young virgin of Príncipe, chosen among the most beautiful. Other roles, such as in Tchiloli, are hereditary. There is no music or dancing. The party is over at around eight in the evening.
Much like in Tchiloli, there are anachronisms in the play: sentinels scrutinize the heavens with binoculars, should the admiral go for an air raid. The garb is usually dappled and colorful.
